How to wash your knits without shrinking them – Bee&Sons
Caring for wool can feel tricky, but with a few simple steps, you can keep your favourite pieces looking great for years! Here’s a guide to washing and drying your wool garments without the fuss.
1. Hand wash
My sister swears by the wool cycle on her washing machine, but when you’ve spent a lot on a piece and you want it to last forever, it’s a risk. Lukewarm water in a nice clean sink is best.
2. Use baby shampoo.
It’s so gentle it won’t deteriorate the yarn. Make sure you rinse well.
3. Machine spin it in a sealable bag
Like a drawstring cotton shopper or a zip up pillowcase (undyed if poss). My spin cycle is 11 minutes - just enough to get most of the moisture out. OR - roll it up in a thick towel, like you used to carry your swimsuit for school - and press it until you feel the water coming through.
4. Dry it flat, somewhere warm
NOT outside (sunshine will fade it) or on a radiator (direct heat will shrink it).
5. Never use a tumble dryer
(ever)
6. If you are lucky enough to have an airing cupboard…
(use it)
By following these easy steps, you can keep your wool garments in tip-top shape!
A little care goes a long way, so your beloved pieces will last for many seasons to come.
